Career Descriptions

As a Front Office Clerk with Humane Ohio you will know you have made a difference in the lives of animals and their caregivers each and every day. The workday begins at 7:15am and typically ends by 6:00pm. The clinic is currently open Monday-Friday, but weekend hours are available on occasion. No evening hours or holidays will be required, helping you maintain a healthy work-life balance. Part-time and full-time opportunities are currently available. Our front off, as with the rest of the clinic, is fast-paced and always busy. 

Front office staff are responsible for overall operations of the front office including, but not limited to, assisting with intake and/or release, entering all client records into the software system and creating reports, answering phone calls, assisting clients at the front desk and providing top notch customer service to all clientele. 

Major Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Front Desk:

  • Oversee operations of check in and check out. 
  • Provide in-person and telephone client services and answer questions. Ensure quality client service. Ensure that owners are happy and comfortable that they are leaving their pets in a safe and loving environment. Be passionate about the Humane Ohio mission and look for ways to make our clients’ day. 
  • Assist in answering phones, making appointments and calling no shows.
  • Maintain complete records for all patients. 
  • Enter in all paperwork daily.
  • Make post-surgery calls daily for owned dogs and cats.
  • Create rabies certificates. 
  • Ensure proper paperwork goes home with each patient.
  • Oversee trap rental program.
  • Maintain literature rack in lobby and keep all front office forms stocked.
  • Balance cash drawer and deposit daily including credit card machine.
  • Keep front counter and lobby area clean and organized.


Phones:

  • Oversee phone calls, online booking and email appointment requests. Ensure 24 hour or less response time for all contacts. Provide in-person and telephone client services and answer questions.
  • Oversee the client schedule and ensure proper daily appointment numbers. Adapt to any shifts in the schedule due to weather, cancellations or other changes. 
  • Provide reports as requested.
  • Keep office area clean and organized.

General

  • Report employee or client problems to management.
  • Assist with getting testimonials and photos of clients and donors.
  • Other duties as requested and necessary for efficient functioning of the clinic.

Education:

Requires a High School Diploma, GED or equivalent. Post-secondary education in animal related sciences or customer service is a plus. 

Key Qualifications and Characteristics:

Candidates are encouraged to have a minimum of one year customer service experience.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Attributes:

  • Must be able to learn basic veterinary medical concepts including but not limited to vaccine protocols and anesthetic risks.
  • Must also be able to communicate basic veterinary concepts to owners and be able to repeat information relayed by a veterinarian.
  • Must be able to communicate with the public on a daily basis in a professional manner both in-person and on the phone.
  • Must be able to quickly and accurately enter data into the software system. 
  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 25 pounds repeatedly.

As a Transport Specialist with Humane Ohio you will know you have made a difference in the lives of animals and their caregivers each and every day. The hours of this position vary weekly, but begin as early as 4:00am some days and other days may go as late as 8:00pm.  Transports are currently driven Monday-Friday. No holidays will be required. This is a part-time position, but could possibly be combined with the Front Office position to create a full-time opportunity. 

Transport Specialists are responsible for driving transport runs safely on schedule, loading and unloading patients from transport vehicle, and ensuring proper paperwork is transported with the animals.

Major Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Ensures complete and accurate records exist for all patients including admission forms, rabies certificates and go-home paperwork.
  • Drives transport runs, ensuring arrival and departure times are on schedule.
  • Safely loads and unloads patients from transport vehicles.
  • Ensures patients are safely secured in transport vehicles.
  • Ensures proper paperwork is transported on both intake and return runs.
  • Handles and transports cash when necessary.
  • Relays basic medical information to transport partners and owners upon release of patients.
  • Responsible for cleaning transport vehicles and cages after and between transports.
  • Maintains the good reputation of Humane Ohio in the community by communicating and acting in a reliable, friendly, and professional manner.

Education:

Requires a High School Diploma, GED or equivalent. Post-secondary education in animal related sciences is a plus. 

Key Qualifications and Characteristics:

Candidates are encouraged to have a minimum of one year animal handling and customer service experience. Must have and maintain a valid Ohio driver’s license and clean driving record. 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Attributes:

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds repeatedly throughout the day.
  • Must be able to lift and carry over 50 pounds with help.
  • Must be able to bend and kneel repeatedly.
  • Must be able to see fine detail in a variety of situations.
  • Must speak fluent English.

As a Veterinary Assistant with Humane Ohio you will know you have made a difference in the lives of animals and their caregivers each and every day. The workday begins at 7:30am and typically ends by 6:00pm. The clinic is currently open Monday-Friday, but weekend hours are available on occasion. No evening hours or holidays will be required, helping you maintain a healthy work-life balance. Part-time and full-time opportunities are currently available. Our assistants work hard and non-stop, but you won’t need to go to the gym after work!

Veterinary Assistants are responsible for daily care of all surgical patients, assisting doctors and veterinary technicians with pre-, peri- and post-operative care of patients, and general cleaning.

Major Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

General Housekeeping:

  • Perform daily cleaning of kennels, cages and public areas for disease prevention.
  • Wash and sterilize all surgical packs.
  • Wash pack laundry and regular clinic laundry.
  • Walk dogs at the end of the day for any staying over.

Patient Care:

  • Triage all patients as they are checked in. Report health concerns to attending veterinarian.
  • Provide excellent patient care. 
  • Prepare animals for surgery. Efficiently pre-medicate, induce, and intubate patients as necessary.
  • Assist veterinarians in the OR as needed and monitor patients in recovery.
  • Able to monitor anesthesia, with a clear idea of abnormal conditions.
  • Ensure prompt and accurate paperwork procedures are followed each day.
  • Follow all written and verbally communicated departmental standard operating procedures.
  • Communicate with clients and assist with rechecks as needed.
  • Knowledge and ability to intake and release patients, including delivering post-operative instructions in a competent and friendly manner.
  • Effectively “team lead,” displaying a positive attitude and acting as a motivating force for all staff members.
  • Transport patients throughout the building.
  • Keep supervisor informed of animal behavior, health or other concerns.
  • Assist transport driver with handling and unloading transport animals. 
  • Make any phone calls to clients as requested.
  • Ensure that proper supplies are kept on hand by doing regular inventory.
  • Provide proper disease control measures in the clinic.

Education:

Requires a High School Diploma, GED or equivalent. Post-secondary education in animal related sciences is a plus.

Candidates are encouraged to have a minimum of one year animal handling experience.

Veterinary Technicians are responsible for daily care of all surgical patients, assisting doctors and veterinary assistants with pre-, peri- and post-operative care of patients, general cleaning, and training others to utilize our patient care protocols.

Major Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

Client Services:

  • Provide in-person and telephone client service and answer questions.
  • Actively promote spay and neuter, and educate clients on responsible animal ownership.
  • Actively support associate staff and volunteers; promote the development of skills related to the advancement of our goals and mission.
  • Check in patients and communicate directly with clients.
  • Represent Humane Ohio in a professional and courteous manner at all times. Provide quality service to clients, volunteers, and staff, recognizing their individual contributions to the success of our organization.
  • Maintain medical inventory and supplies.

Patient Care:

Key Qualifications and Characteristics:

Candidates must have and maintain an Ohio Registered Veterinary Technician certification. 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Attributes:

  • Must be able to learn basic veterinary medical concepts including but not limited to vaccine protocols and anesthetic risks.
  • Must also be able to communicate basic veterinary concepts to owners and be able to repeat information relayed by a veterinarian.
  • Must be able to communicate with the public on a daily basis in a professional manner.

As a Veterinarian with Humane Ohio you will know you have made a difference in the lives of animals and their caregivers each and every day. The workday begins at 7:30am and typically ends by 4:00pm. The clinic is currently open Monday-Friday, but weekend hours would be an option for an interested candidate. No evening hours or holidays will be required, helping you maintain a healthy work-life balance. We are seeking multiple additional veterinarians to keep up with demand, and are open to full-time candidates down to veterinarians who can commit to anything more than two shifts per month.

The Veterinarian is responsible for daily care and sterilization of all surgical patients and maintenance of preventative health programs and medical protocol. Quality patient care is the highest priority.

Major Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  •  Examine animals prior to surgery to determine their ability to withstand surgery and to observe any signs of illness or injury.
  • Perform surgical sterilizations following Humane Ohio approved protocols (average of 30-35 surgeries a day per fully trained veterinarian).
  • Inoculate animals and provide recommendations for follow up care.
  • Supervise veterinary technicians, veterinary assistants, and kennel personnel in medical matters following Humane Ohio policies.
  • Supervise cleaning program for prevention of infectious/zoonotic disease.
  • Continue research and maintenance of safe and efficacious medical protocol regarding anesthesia and surgery.
  • Follow Humane Ohio standards of care, medical protocols, and guiding principles
  • Supervise handling and recording of controlled substances by veterinary technicians.
  • Help oversee OSHA compliance in relation to the clinic
  • Create forms and reports as necessary.
  • Maintain a current Ohio veterinary license in good standing.
  • Supervise post-op rechecks and order of medical treatments as necessary to ensure complete surgical recovery.
  • Answer emergencies for animals sterilized through the clinic if normally scheduled on-call veterinarian unavailable.
  • Actively promote spay and neuter, and educate clients on responsible pet ownership.
  • Actively support associate staff and volunteers, and promote the development of skills related to the advancement of our goals and mission.
  • Represent Humane Ohio in a professional, courteous manner at all times.
  • Provide quality services to clients, volunteers, and staff recognizing their individual contributions to the success of our organization.
  • Participate on committees and special projects as assigned. This may include, but is not limited to, such projects as training of other veterinarians on high volume spay/neuter techniques, speaking engagements, community education, advising shelters on shelter medicine protocols, participating in our Outreach Program.
  • Secure the DEA license and Ohio Pharmacy license for the clinic if requested.
  • Other duties as requested and necessary for efficient functioning of the clinic.

Compensation:

The Veterinarian is expected to earn an attractive salary. Benefits include access to medical and dental insurance, paid holidays, paid time off, CE allowance and payment of medical license.

Education:

A DVM degree is required. 

Key Qualifications and Characteristics:

All candidates must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Ohio or be able to secure such licensure within 30 days of an offer. The preferred candidate will have familiarity with high-volume spay/neuter procedures, but we also are happy to mentor new or recent graduates!

Other expected qualifications of the successful candidate include: a demonstrated track record of strong leadership, excellent time management skills, and the ability to perform and remain calm under pressure.
